What makes home design so exciting to follow is the fact that trends are ever-changing. Something that you absolutely adore today may end up looking completely ridiculous in a few years. Remember lava lamps and blow-up plastic furniture from the 90’s? Looking back on those trends, we really wonder what the heck we were all thinking.

It should go without saying that you want your bathroom floors to be easy to clean, especially after any potential mishaps. For some reason, in the 1970’s it became quite popular to carpet bathroom floors, and we can’t fathom why. It’s pretty clear that wet areas and carpets don’t go well, and so we hope to never see this again.

Plastic Sofa Covers
Plastic couch covers seem like they would be a good idea, but in practice, why would anybody want to ever sit on a piece of plastic? True, they do prevent your couch from getting dirty, but these covers also prevent you from really feeling comfortable. There’s no worse feeling than sitting on a piece of plastic and having to un-peel your legs from the couch. Slipcovers accomplish the goal of saving your sofa from spills but without the discomfort of plastic covers.

Ruffle Toilet Seat Covers
It’s unclear why this ever became a trend. Why would anyone look at a window curtain and think: “you know where else I’d want this? The bathroom.” Fabric near the toilet seat doesn’t seem like it’s the best idea. While it’s okay to cover the toilet seat, maybe draping ruffled fabric should never be a thing again.

Plaid Everything
Plaid is a classic pattern to add both to your home and your wardrobe, but there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Having matching plaid pillows, curtains, and bedding really goes overboard and just screams out “overly Americana.” Instead, it’s better to opt for plaid accents rather than the whole kit and caboodle.

This one is especially common in Florida. While there are some cases where these could be okay, most of the time the patterns and images etched on the shower doors are quite tacky like random swirls or naked mermaids. If you want to add trendy patterns to your showers, perhaps it’s better to use shower curtains that are easy to change out once the trend dies.
